A Note on Other Boot Brands
Jeannette and her husband, Richard, were generously sponsored by several boot brands during their Ride Across America. This 4,000 mile journey rigorously tested the ease of use, affect on the horse, and overall design of each boot. It is important to note that most companies continually work to improve their design, but during the ride, they found Renegades to be far superior in every way. If it's called "Barefoot," why would my horse need Hoof Boots?

In a perfect world, horses would be pastured in the type of environment in which they will be ridden, thereby causing the hooves to callous to the degree required of that riding environment. However, in most cases, horses are kept in a soft, grassy pasture or paddock. Just like children who run around barefoot, (while we adults cringe!) hooves also adapt to their living conditions. So it is best to provide a variety of footing when possible. The barefoot trim will 'trick' the hooves into becoming more calloused than they need for the pasture they live in, but it may not be quite enough for more extreme riding terrain. It is a horse by horse case. Jeannette has 3 horses who can go from a grassy pasture to mountain riding completely barefoot, while her other 2 require boot protection for comfort even on shorter rides. Remember, barefoot is much healthier for your horse's hooves, joints, ligaments, tendons, and overall body comfort, so taking a minute to apply boots for riding in rigorous terrain is well worth the quality of life improvement for your horse.

It takes 1-3 growth cycles of about 6 months each to develop excellent hoof depending on the initial condition of the hoof. Additionally, the more miles ridden and the more the horse is able to move around, the faster the hooves develop. (A horse that is ridden frequently will maintain the best hoof overall.) If your horse has been under consistent barefoot care for less than a year, it is likely that the hoof is not conditioned enough to be ridden barefoot yet and will need boots to help with the transition.

If your horse has conformation or rehabilitation issues such as laminitis or navicular, this may limit their ability to be comfortable on terrain they are not used to. Hoof boots will fill that gap of needing protection and support, but still offering the benefits of leaving the hooves barefoot.

How much do they cost and where do I get them?

A pair (2 boots) currently runs $220 - $240 (Remember how many miles/rides this will last and then compare to the price of several sets of shoes over many riding seasons!)
